What will Arsene do next?

It seems that fourth place is the most hotly contested spot in the Barclay’s Premier League this season. The tussle for this coveted Champions League position has changed hands on numerous occasions as we headed into matches to be played over the holiday season and we are no closer to finding out the final outcome after those games were played.

Although most pundits and fans alike always expect that the Arsenal will finish in a top four position, the pressure for them to stay part of the leading pack of clubs is starting to show.

With that being the case, it is not a matter of Arsene Wenger feeling that he is forced by the weight of fans expectations to dip into the transfer market this January but rather a necessity of sorts because of injuries to the squad. Firstly, let's take a look at the Gunner's defensive problems where they badly need to secure at least one signing.

Thomas Vermaelen, a center-half who was out for long periods of the season, has been playing out of position at left back following injuries to Kieran Gibbs and Andre Santos. Equally as worrying is that on the right side of defence, both Bacary Sagna and Carl Jenkinson are still recovering from long term injuries.

At the other end of the field, the Gunners need a striker who can partner Robin van Persie ASAP!  The two-month loan of Thierry Henry - Arsenal's record scorer - will surely inject some leadership and confidence into the team and according to Wenger's statements on Henry's form and fitness, it looks like he is more than capable of providing some much needed cover while Marouane Chamakh and Gervinho head to the Africa Cup of Nations.

This move to sign Henry, even though for only 2 months, is a step in the right direction for Arsenal but might also represent a massive gamble of sorts! If Henry doesn’t perform, I am sure there will be quite a backlash so Wenger can’t just settle on signing the Frenchman alone to strengthen his front line.

And it seems that Le Professor knows this as there are rumors flying around about the possible signing of Lukas Podolski, the stunning Polish-born striker who has scored 14 goals in 16 Bundesliga matches this season. However, before Gunners' supporters get too carried away, press reports make it seem like the German international is resistant to making a move from Cologne at the moment.

Transfer rumours aside, it's been great to see the recovery that Arsenal has made after their poor start to the season. However, it is now vital that Arsene ensures that his key players such as Theo Walcott and Van Persie remain with Arsenal. He really has to make sure that their contracts are extended and signed - and that a game plan is set in place after Henry leaves and that their defence is strengthened.

I have faith in Arsenal and Wenger – but the time has come for him to acquire quality players that will fill the obvious gaps in the team right now. The window is open, so it’s now just a matter of time to see… what will Arsene do next?
