After the goal fest of the first two weeks of the season, the BPL calmed down to a certain extent this weekend with only Manchester United scoring more than two in their 3-0 stroll against West Ham.
The stand out result was without doubt Wigan’s victory at White Hart Lane where they were thrashed 9-1 last season. For Tottenham, only 48 hours after being paired with Inter Milan in the group stage, it was the ultimate trip back down to earth with a bang!
It does not bode well for the Lilywhites moving forward. Assuming they are not going to win the Champions League, their league form cannot be allowed to suffer with their extra European responsibilities this term. Qualifying for Europe’s premier competition is a fine achievement but it will count for nothing if they do not make it the rule rather than the exception.
The saving grace for Spurs was Manchester City’s defeat at Sunderland. The Black Cats are far from world beaters but coped with what Mancini’s men threw at them with relative ease. The only scare was an early contender for 'Miss of the Season' from Carlos Tevez.
If you haven’t seen it yet make sure you turn on mio Stadium at some point over the next couple of days because it will be repeated plenty of times! Roberto Mancini obviously has no idea what his best starting eleven is yet and although as you would expect, some of their players showed glimpses of genius, they looked nothing like a united outfit and are miles away from a title winning side.
Elsewhere, a resolute performance from Arsenal at Blackburn has some purring about a Gunner’s title charge and Liverpool just about did enough to pick up three points at home to West Brom but there was still nothing to suggest they will be anything other than mediocre over the next eight months.
Going into the International break, the BPL table has a reasonably familiar look and on the evidence of the first three games it is difficult to imagine Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United being dislodged from the top three places from here on in.
The question of what order they finish in however, is still very much up for debate. Fourth place still fascinates and at the bottom it is hotting up already with four teams (Fulham, Everton, Stoke and West Ham), yet to win a game.
The other issue worth a mention this Monday, is the imminent shutting of the transfer window, which is now just hours away. It is unlikely any blockbuster deals will be completed in time but a couple worth monitoring, if the media coverage in the UK is anything to go by, are Carlton Cole being linked with a move to Anfield and there is still the prospect of some goalkeepers moving before the clock ticks round to midnight tomorrow.
Surely, Shay Given will try and find a way out of Eastlands with Fulham and his old boss Mark Hughes being the obvious route. And if Given goes to Craven Cottage, maybe there is still time (despite denials to the contrary on Saturday) that Arsene Wenger can finally do what all Arsenal fans have been screaming at him to do for three years!
How he didn’t bring a goalkeeper in before the start last season, let alone this one, is beyond me but if he can finally secure the services of the 37-year-old Mark Schwarzer, Arsenal will at least have a stop gap custodian between the sticks who could, come the end of the campaign, have made a telling contribution in the Gunner’s attempts to break the Chelsea-United monopoly at the top of the table.
The BPL takes a weekend off this week but don’t forget to join us on Tiger Passport to the Premier tonight at 10pm and make sure you are in The Goalmouth on Wednesday night at 10pm!
