Chelsea on top, Wigan to face the drop

Chelsea have started the new BPL season the way they finished the old one in May, scoring goals for fun and annihilating teams as if they were from a different league. The reaction has seen Chelsea go from red hot to white hot favourites for the title two games in!

There appears to be little doubt that they are the team to beat but I still want to see them up against a couple of top half of the table teams before everyone gets too carried away. A glance at the fixture list shows that the Blues have three eminently winnable games next up; Stoke at home, West Ham away then Blackpool visit Stamford Bridge.

On Saturday’s evidence the latter could end up with a double digit score line! Chelsea’s first real tests come in quick succession with a visit to Manchester City on 25th September followed by the visit of Arsenal a week later.

Win both those games and even at this early stage it is difficult to see who can topple them. Worth noting that Manchester City did the double over the champions last term so the outcome of that game will give us a fascinating insight to the progress and development of both clubs over the summer.

No one can be certain what Manchester City are going to deliver from one game to the next which makes all the fixtures compelling! Don’t forget to watch City taking on Liverpool live on mio Stadium in the early hours of tomorrow morning!

Another reason for Chelsea hardening as BPL favourites is Manchester United only managing a draw at Craven Cottage yesterday. It is a ground that has become something of a pain for Sir Alex Ferguson.

In United’s last three visits to Fulham they have only picked up yesterday’s solitary point. Wastefulness in front of goal cost them dear and the Wayne Rooney question persists. Absent with a sudden ailment on Sunday, he is clearly not the same player as he was last season when he scored 34 goals for the Red Devils.

Even then, United could not win the league so what chance have they got without their best player being in form? In their second game of the season last year at Burnley, a missed penalty ended up costing them dear. Could yesterday’s fluffed spot kick be equally disastrous this time round?

From the top to the bottom, I will leave you with thoughts on relegation. If anyone thinks that Wigan can escape relegation can they email me and tell me how?

Two games in, ten conceded and not one goal scored. It is not the defeats as much as it is the manner of them. Yes, you can forgive the Chelsea mauling, they were not the first and they won’t be the last side that happens to this year but Blackpool’s destruction at the hands of Arsenal highlights just how bad Wigan are.

They can’t score, can’t defend and I cannot see how Roberto Martinez can pull this one around. Chelsea are favourites for the title of Champions, and Martinez is favourite for the title of next BPL manager to leave his post!

If they are beaten by Hartlepool in the League Cup on Tuesday then get squashed by Spurs at the weekend, it could happen just three weeks into the season. The BPL takes no prisoners, it is a brutal business but it all adds to the attraction and I don’t know about you but after just two weeks I can’t take my eyes off of it! 19 games down, 361 to go, every one of ‘em LIVE and exclusive on mio Stadium!

Thanks to everyone who has sent emails and SMS’s to the shows over the last week. Keep them coming. Remember, mio Stadium is your home of football in Singapore and we want you to be part of the action.

Congratulations to Seeraj from Pasir Ris who won our first ever Tiger Passport to the Premier trip to the UK to watch Chelsea v Stoke next weekend. We will be sending someone else to the UK tonight on the show so make sure you watch every Monday at 10pm. It’s the only show on the television you need to watch with your passport by your side!
