First up, let me just say how proud I am of the Singapore Cubs football team, who up to now have reached the semi-finals of the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games by beating Serbia 3-2.
Now lets put that result in perspective.
The Serbian national side recently played in the 2010 World Cup and is currently ranked 13 in the FIFA rankings. The Singapore national side, The Lions is ranked at 121.
And whilst Fandi Ahmad is the only Singapore player to play professionally in Europe for FC Groningen back in 1983, Serbia have Nemanja Vidic who plays for the mighty Manchester United.
So well done cubs! Now back to the BPL.
As expected champions Chelsea started where they left off last season with a massive thumping. Last week they put six past the hapless Baggies and to be honest they weren't even playing at their full potential.
What a frightening prospect and I'm sure the boys in blue will be licking their lips as they take on Wigan on Saturday. The last time these two sides met was when Chelsea thumped the Latics 8-0 to clinch the Premier League crown last season.
This is a match Wigan coach Roberto Martinez would want to see off in a hurry especially after last week’s humiliating 4-0 defeat at home to Blackpool. That for me is the result of the opening weekend’s matches.
However, new boys Blackpool could be in for a reality check when they travel to London to face Arsenal. If The Tangerines get a draw against Arsenal, then I reckon they have a chance to stay up at the end of the season. If that happens, then my vote is for Ian Holloway for Manager of the year. Yes, I know it is only the second week, but one can hope.
There was a solid win for Manchester United at home against Newcastle with Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs turning back the clock. Up next, the Red Devils take on Fulham at Craven Cottage now managed by old boy Mark Hughes. United were crippled by defensive injuries and were well beaten 3-0 last season but I think that they have too much firepower against a side that only appointed a new manager just a few weeks ago.
Elsewhere, Liverpool and Spurs had different results during their midweek exploits in Europe and would love to notch up their first Premiership win of the season this weekend. But now, let’s quickly talk about transfers and focus on Man City who really are making all the headlines:
Man City’s new additions this week:
Mario Balotelli and James Milner, which takes their total spending to over 300 million pounds since the Abu Dhabi group took over in 2008. Let's not forget they also bought Yaya Toure, David Silva, Aleksandar Kolarov and Jerome Boateng this summer. What a list of players! This means that Robinho, Roque Santa Cruz and Shay Given will be on their way out.
How about this for a thought? Shay Given to Arsenal. That would certainly stop the goalkeeping problems wouldn't it? And at 34, he has got at least 4 more good years left in him at the highest level.
So much to look forward to over the weekend and before I forget, there is a new WAG in town. Mario Balotelli's girlfriend Mellisa Castagnoli who is a former Miss Italy semi-finalist. Go Google her and tell me what you think?
Don't forget to text or e-mail us about your thoughts on the BPL. I would love to hear from you and will bring it up on the show with our pundits as well. If you like you can follow and drop me a line on twitter. It's kui_jien
