What a start to the new season of the BPL and of course mio Stadium! The weekend had everything; controversy and drama in spades at Anfield; an entertaining goalless draw at White Hart Lane, (not something that you see very often!) and a shock result at the DW.
Let’s start on Merseyside where referee Martin Atkinson incurred the wrath of the Kop for sending off new boy Joe Cole just before half-time for a lunge on Laurent Koscielny. Roy Hodgson has started making noises about appealing the straight red but if he does decide to try and get it overturned he will be wasting his time.
Incredibly for a team who had their season written off before it even started, Liverpool came out for the second half and took the lead but just when it looked like a fairytale start for the new manager, Pepe Reina had a shocker!
Liverpool showed enough to suggest they will not be mid-table fodder as some have suggested but can they maintain a push to get back into the UEFA Champions League? I am not convinced… yet!
How the first match of the season finished goalless remains a mystery. Even allowing for the sensational performance of Joe Hart, Spurs should have taken at least one of a hatful of first half chances.
Manchester City were diabolical in the opening period but at least showed something after the interval without ever looking like a team that cost a large fortune to assemble. Whereas Liverpool and Arsenal will be content enough with a point each, the draw in this one suits neither side.
Tottenham will know they should have won and if they miss out on a top four finish by a whisker next May it could be that they point back to the first day of the season as the reason.
City were a massive disappointment. I was hoping that they could emerge as genuine title contenders but on this evidence they look to still be some way away. They have clearly got the talent to trouble the best teams this season at times but not the consistency that is required to go all the way.
Unless Newcastle thrash Manchester United early tomorrow morning (Singapore time), there will be no bigger surprise than Blackpool’s dismantling of Wigan. It clearly does not bode well for Roberto Martinez and his side moving forward but hat’s off to the Seasiders!
The red hot relegation favourites got off to a flyer and as Reading and Hull have both proved in recent seasons, if you pick up two or three wins early on you can survive in the big league! I still cannot believe they will manage it but that is what makes the BPL the world’s most exciting competition! That was the first of many shock results that will all keep us glued to mio Stadium for years to come!
