When George Best arrived at Manchester United for the first time as a fifteen year old, he was so in awe of the club, the manager and the team that he ran back to Belfast within two weeks, afraid he would never get to play for them. But Matt Busby knew he had found gold dust and gave him another chance. Forty-four years later, when George died, 100,000 people turned out in the rain for the closest thing to a state funeral Northern Ireland had seen for generations. Millions more watched on television around the globe, to pay tribute to one of the greatest footballers the world had ever seen.
George Best could dribble, shoot, head, tackle, was brave and could score goals, great goals. Part of the sensational Manchester United side that won the European Cup and two first division championships, Best, along with Law and Charlton formed arguably the greatest forward line a club side has ever produced. Put simply, by 1968, at the tender age of 22, George Best was the greatest player in the world!
George Best eventually transcended football itself, he became an icon. Dubbed the fifth Beatle George crossed over the line between sportsman and celebrity...he became the first ever British sporting superstar. This incredible video has it all, the great goals, the great games and hear George in his own words talking through the highs and the lows of the most stunning football career of the 20th century.
